Supporting Education in Uganda

The Rotary Club of St. Marys continues to strengthen its international service efforts through an ongoing partnership with two education-focused initiatives in Kisooba, Uganda: the Nile River Skilling Institute (NRSI) and Kito Community School.

There's more to the story…

A Lifeline Through Skills Training

NRSI provides vocational training to young adults, many of whom face significant financial, social, or personal challenges. The institute offers hands-on instruction in trades such as auto mechanics, cosmetology, and computer skills. In 2023, NRSI grew from 15 to 49 students, supported by nine instructors and newly donated classroom technology.

The impact is deeply personal. Many students—once marginalized or without options—have now completed internships and secured full-time employment. These successes are made possible through a vital partnership with a network of over 220 local churches, which help students obtain internships and job placements. This church connection is essential in a system where hiring often requires unofficial payments.

Kito School: A Growing Need

Rotary support in the region also extends to Kito Community School, an elementary school serving children up to Grade 7. It began in 2017 with the donation of a shipping container classroom from the Rotary Club of Grand Bend, after a school in the Goderich area was dismantled. That initial act of generosity laid the foundation for what has become a critical resource for the region.

A New Focus: Bunk Beds

In response to the increasing student population and the need for better accommodation, the Rotary Club of St. Marys is applying for a District Grant to provide bunk beds for students. This practical initiative will improve living conditions and ensure more youth can safely and comfortably attend school or vocational training.

A Lasting Impact

This project exemplifies Rotary’s commitment to Education and Literacy, one of Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus. It also highlights the power of collaboration—between clubs, faith communities, and local leaders—to bring lasting change.

Rotarian John Harlton first became involved through the Kito School connection, and our club is proud to continue building on this legacy.
